Last year, we asked our visitors to get creative for International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD), encouraging all budding writers and poets amongst our followers to get in touch and share their work inspired by vultures or our work to support these endangered birds.
The competition was well received, producing some fantastic entries that moved us all at the Trust. Choosing a winner was tricky but in the end, Dave Winship was declared the winner of our adult category and Martha was crowned the winner in the junior category. Read their winning entries.
We had such a great response last year that we have decided to run the competition again, though with the addition of being open to submissions from artists as well! Enter this year as part of our IVAD activities and tell us, or show us how you feel about vultures. This competition is open to your creative interpretation, including poetry, short stories, drawings and paintings, sculptures, singing or dancing.
Does the Vulture crisis concern you; what emotions engulf you when you think about these birds and their struggle for survival? Is it their behaviour and looks or their reputation that intrigues you? Maybe it is the terrible threats that affect them which are causing their rapid declines that really worries you. Or, are you just so inspired by one of the Trust’s projects that you want to put pen to paper and tell the world about it? Vultures inspire us to work harder and do all that we can to help them. We would love to hear how you feel about vultures; we are excited to see what creativity these incredible birds provoke in you. The focus can be on any element you wish that relates to vultures. So, have a think about what it is about these fascinating birds that inspire the inner writer, poet or artist in you!
Entries will be judged by our resident vulture brain, Dr Campbell Murn, and inspiration to the next generation, Miriam Nicholls. They will select a winner in both the adult and junior category who will each receive:
